BRINGING KNOWLEDGE

Si buscamos en el diccionario el verbo “to bring” se traduce como “llevar a alguien o algo a un lugar o a una persona, o en la dirección de la persona que habla”. 

Lady Gaga:

Money will never bring happiness.

Miremos algunos ejemplos más:

– “Bring me that knife/Tráeme ese cuchillo.”

– “When they visit us they always bring their dog with them/Cuando nos visitan siempre traen su perro con ellos.”

– “Shall I bring anything to the party? – Oh, just a bottle./¿Llevo algo a la fiesta? – Oh, solo una botella”.

Hoy queremos contarte acerca de los distintos significados que puede adquirir este verbo al convertirlo en phrasal verb ( “to bring” + preposición/adverbio). 

*IMPORTANTE: Cada ejemplo conjugará el verbo al tiempo que se requiera. Los adverbios o preposiciones no se conjugan. Aquí va una ayuda:

• Past Simple: brought
• Past Continuous: was/were bringing
• Past Perfect: had brought
• Present Simple: bring/brings
• Present Continuous: is/are/am bringing
• Present Perfect: have/has brought
• Future Simple: will bring
• Future Continuous: will be bringing
• Future Perfect: will have brought

BRING UP

• Traer un tema a la conversación con un objetivo, mencionarlo. E.g.: 

“I’m going to ask my boss for a raise at our next meeting. I must find the opportunity to bring it up.”

“Voy a pedirle a mi jefe un aumento de sueldo en nuestra próxima reunión. Debo encontrar la oportunidad de mencionarlo”.

• Vomitar. E.g.:

“I’m stuffed. I think I’ll bring up.”

“Estoy lleno (por comer mucho). Creo que vomitaré.”

#Sinónimos > vomit, barf, throw up, disgorge.

BRING ABOUT

• Traer consecuencias. E.g.:

“The war could bring about destruction for our economy”.

“La guerra podría provocar/causar la destrucción de nuestra economía”.

#Sinónimos > cause, produce, generate.

BRING AROUND

• Reanimar, recobrar la consciencia. E.g.:

“A man drowned in the sea and had to be brought around”. 

“Un hombre se ahogó en el mar y tuvo que ser reanimado”.

#Sinónimos > revive, reanimate.

• Persuadir, hacer cambiar de opinión a alguien. E.g.:

“He is trying to bring you around his point of view”.

“Él está tratando de hacerte entender su punto de vista”.

#Sinónimos > persuade, argue, induce.

BRING BACK

• Devolver algo.

“This jacket doesn’t fit me. I’ll bring it back”.

“Esta chaqueta no me queda bien. La devolveré».

#Sinónimos > return, restore, take back, give back.

• Popularizar una moda antigua. Generalmente lo hacen los famosos.

“Scarlett Johanson brought vintage clothing back”.

“Scarlett Johanson nos devolvió la ropa vintage”.

#Sinónimos > get back at.

BRING DOWN 

• Tirar abajo, deprimir, arruinar.

You are enjoying a meeting with friends and one of them starts talking about politics: “Oh, don’t bring it down.” 

Estás disfrutando de una reunión con amigos y uno de ellos comienza a hablar de política: «Oh, no lo bajes».

BRING IN

• Traer hacia un sitio/lugar.

“It’s really cold outside. Bring the dog in, please”.

“Hace mucho frío afuera. Deja pasar al perro, por favor”.

#Sinónimos > get in, enter.

• Traer a alguien a trabajar a la misma compañía en la que uno trabaja.

“John has lost his job. I would like to bring him in the company”.

“John ha perdido su trabajo. Me gustaría traerlo a la empresa”.

#Sinónimos > introduce, get into.

BRING ON

• Enfrentar, afrontar un desafío.

«This challenge is quite tricky but we’re gonna bring it on».

 «Este desafío es bastante complicado, pero vamos a afrontarlo».

#Sinónimos > face, confront.

BRING OFF

• Hacer algo exitosamente.

«You have brought it off. This surprise birthday is amazing».

«Lo has sacado adelante. Esta sorpresa de cumpleaños es increíble».

#Sinónimos > get, reach, obtain.

BRING OUT

• Llevar fuera.

«We can bring the outdoor table out to have dinner.»

«Podemos sacar la mesa de exterior para cenar».

#Sinónimos > take out.
